What is Labiaplasty?
The surgical labiaplasty procedure carefully removes redundant tissue from the labia minora or the inner lips at the vaginal opening. The labia minora are bits of very soft, delicate tissue. They are intended to be covered by the skin of the labia majora, but sometimes fall outside of the outer lips. There are several reasons this may happen, from genetics to hormones to childbirth. Whatever the cause of excess labial tissue, surgical refinement can address important aspects of a woman’s sense of wellness.
Appearance
The appearance of a woman’s “sensual parts” matters. It matters to her sense of self. This has nothing to do with a perception that a woman should look a certain way. Whoever said that labiaplasty is all about getting the appearance of a designer vagina has probably never lived with a surplus of genital tissue. Oversized labia get pinched; they get compressed, and all of this can hurt! Sometimes, the best way to improve daily comfort is to surgically refine the size and shape of the tissue that doesn’t fare well in the context of normal clothing styles.
Sex
Genital tissue is an integral aspect of sexual wellness. When there is an excessive amount of loose, sagging tissue at the vaginal opening, there is a chance that the labia may get pulled during sexual intercourse. Tissue may also inhibit the degree of sensitivity a woman is meant to have.
